Fear and Loathing - Viva Las Vegas!

"We can't stop here, this is bat country!" - Hunter S. Thompson

I was sorting through my book pile this weekend and came across my copy of Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I can't say I've ever attempted to chase the American dream (what with me being British and all) through a drug-induced haze (not unless you count Slush Puppies), but it's a funny book, and I enjoyed the movie, too.

However, I did think I was seeing things one Friday evening on the Strip, when I saw a rotund bearded lady in a skimpy belly-dancing outfit, with a giant snake around her neck, shaking her womanly assets at passers-by. The women looked alarmed, and the men simply ran for the hills. In fact, I could have sworn I saw one gentleman give the sign of the cross and say a silent prayer before he, too, bolted to take refuge inside the nearest casino.

I think perhaps Hunter S. Thompson put it best when he said, "Too weird to live, too rare to die!" That quote right there probably sums up Las Vegas.

Perhaps it's my diet speaking and all the exercise programmes I'm currently trying to soldier through, but when I think of Las Vegas, I immediately think of food. The fondest memory I have of my holiday last year in Vegas is of the incredible buffets I indulged in.

I stayed at the Aria hotel and spent many of my mornings swimming and my days, walking, building up an appetite to rival an entire football team. And of all the buffets in Las Vegas, the best had to be the lunch buffet at the M Resort Spa Casino on the south end of the Las Vegas Strip. With rows and rows of different cuisine, such as Chinese, Mexican, American and Indian food, it's no wonder the queue was so long. But it was worth every single bite.

Staring at all these scrumptious-looking desserts makes me want to hop on a plane to Vegas right now. So what's your favourite eating spot in Vegas? Or perhaps there's a restaurant in your home town that rivals the spread at the M Resort. I'd love to hear about it.

To my American readers, I've watched enough cooking shows like Man Vs. Food to know that you  are connoisseurs in the kitchen, particularly when large portions are concerned - my favourite kind of meal, coincidentally! The incredible food is one of the reasons why I love going to America, so I'd be interested in hearing about some of your favourite dining experiences.

  1. The Bellagio breakfast is out of this world. You should try that. I haven't heard of the M Resort. I'll look it up next time I'm in town.

  2. Hi, Simon. Thank you for your comment, and welcome to my blog!

I, too, love the Bellagio breakfast buffet. It's probably my second favourite place to eat in Vegas, right after the M Resort. I cannot stress this enough. You must try the buffet at the M Resort. It's like nothing I've ever seen before.

I love the hot chocolate at the Bellagio, not to mention their wide array of desserts. And I really miss their creamed spinach. I must find a recipe.

  3. The Bellagio is my favourite also. Nothing beats their eggs benedict.

  4. Hi, Melanie. Welcome to Kidnapped by Fiction! Thank you for your comment.

I don't think I've tried the eggs benedict at the Bellagio. I had them at the M Resort and they were unbelievably delicious. I'll be sure to try them the next time I'm lucky enough to go to the Bellagio.

The M Resort is quite far from the main part of the Strip, and the taxi ride isn't cheap, but it's so worth it. Like I said to Simon, you should definitely make the trip for the buffet. You won't be disappointed.
